About Romania : History & Description

Romania is located in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine. Romania's total area is just smaller then the state of Oregon in the United States. Romania suffers environmentally from soil erosion and degradation, water pollution, air pollution in the south from industrial discharge, and contamination of Danube delta wetlands.

The July 2007 estimated population of Romania is just over 22 million people. According to the Romanian 2002 census this population is ethnically 89.5% Romanian, 6.6% Hungarian, 2.5% Rroma, and several other minority groups. While Romanian is the official language, almost 7% speak Hungarian and just over 1% speak Romany (the Rroma language).

Romania left its communist government behind for a republic in 1989, forming its constitution by 1991. While it has seen economic growth, the conditions of the poor of Romania have continued to remain very poor with little hope. Romania joined the European Union on January 1, 2007. 25% of the population is listed below the poverty level! And this only accounts for those that can be counted. Many are not on the books.

Crime and corruption continue to be a major problem plaguing Romania. Human trafficking, drugs, hunger, and homelessness are prevalent.
